Clove Productions, in association with Quade Productions, is pleased to announce the first full Twin Cities production of Verbatim Verboten, Michael Martin's invasion-of-privacy revue. Verbatim Verboten has made audiences laugh, gasp and groan in Seattle (where it just re-opened), New York, New Orleans, and especially Chicago, where its run at the Royal George lasted over a year.
The idea of Verbatim Verboten is simplicity itself: Select maybe 20 word-for-word transcripts of the famous and powerful speaking (they thought) off the record, ask talented actors to sharpen their wits and clear their throats, then let 'er rip. Martin has devoted an embarrassing amount of time to this project since its conception in 1999, and has almost 200 such transcripts available—secretly recorded phone conversations, trial testimony, private correspondence and e-mails, unknowingly live mics and recording session outtakes, 911 calls. Every Verbatim Verboten show is different from the one before.
For four weeks beginning April 6th, seven funny and fearless Twin Cities actors will essay foul-mouthed sports legends, the hapless British royal family, sort-of scary Mafioso, scheming businessmen, hypocritical politicos, and Hollywood galoots galore. Although the "fairness doctrine" of Verbatim Verboten requires that the actors deliver these transcripts word for word—confusing parts included—they don't promise not to twist the interpretation a bit, once in awhile. Who says the Mafioso can't be done queer, Tommy Lasorda female, or Paris Hilton as a slam poet?
